The 6th Annual Boomers & Beyond 2011 Health and Wellness Expo will be held on Sunday, April 3 at 1:00pm- 5:00pm in the HPD Terry and Assembly II Buildings on the Nova Southeastern University Campus in Davie.

NSU and community partners will offer health, wellness and aging screenings including blood pressure, bone density and blood glucose.  The day will be full of important educational information on aging and health. 

Guests will also enjoy the many activities planned including a live jazz concert by Broward College Jazz Combo, a performance by Brazilian Voices, art show, raffles, giveaways and much more.

The event is free and open to the public ages 40+.

WPBT2 Premieres Autism: Coming to Age

In the next 10 to 15 years, an estimated 800,000 children with autism will age out of the school system and transition into adulthood. Then, they will look to ill-prepared state and federal governments for the support services and resources to meet their many needs — a situation autism experts refer to as the "coming tsunami."

WPBT2 will premiere Autism: Coming to Age on Friday, April 8 at 10:00pm.  This one-hour documentary provides an inside look at the lives of three adults with autism and includes interviews with their families and support teams. Autism and disability experts from Massachusetts, New York, Washington, Virginia and Pennsylvania also discuss the current system, impending challenges and possible outcomes for the future.

 


H20 for Haiti Program

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Dorrin Rolle and Rebuilding Haiti Committee to Sponsor “H20 for Haiti” Benefit Program 

Sweet Micky,T-Vice, Alan Cave, Jowee Omicil, Harmonik , Gabel and Other Artists To Lend Their Talent for A Day of Reflection 


On Saturday, January 23, 2010 Haitian business owners, artists and community leaders, along with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Dorrin Rolle will present “Rebuilding” relief event to raise money for the earthquake victims in Haiti. The group will sponsor “H20 for Haiti”, at Oak Grove Park, 690 NE 159th Street, North Miami Beach, FL from 3pm-10pm. The goal of this effort is to immediately raise money to provide 2 million gallons of water desperately needed to the earthquake victims. 

This is the beginning of an ongoing effort to ensure that the people of Haiti will receive the water that is so needed. 

The expected 20,000 attendees of this event will be able to make donations towards the purchase of water, or bring bottles of water which the Rebuilding Haiti Committee will distribute in Port-au-Prince, immediately following the event.

Repairing American Healthcare

This one-hour program will feature eight expert guests from different sectors of the healthcare community. 

Issues Together, they will challenge one another as to how to best repair what many would argue is our country’s broken healthcare system. The discussion will be moderated by Helen Ferre, the host of WPBT2’s weekly public affairs program, Issues. This one hour special will air Tuesday, October 27th from 8 to 9 pm on WPBT2.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CANCER, airs Wednesday, April 16 at 9:00 p.m. on WPBT/Channel 2 in Miami.
Cancer As the third installment in PBS’ Take One Step health campaign, this program seeks to answer the question, “Why does anyone still die of cancer?” Award-winning filmmaker Linda Garmon shares the story of her husband’s battle with the disease. In the first 90 minutes of the program, she returns to the hospitals and institutions where her husband was treated to chronicle the lives of patients, doctors and researchers who are united in the hope for a cancer cure. Part science, part personal catharsis, part character-driven storytelling, this powerful documentary uncovers the truth about cancer and tells us where we stand in fighting the battle against the disease. Immediately after, news journalist and breast cancer survivor Linda Ellerbee hosts a 30-minute follow-up discussion, “Take One Step: A Conversation About Cancer With Linda Ellerbee.” The panel covers the importance of prevention and screenings, what to expect if you or a loved one is diagnosed and how to live with the disease.

Boomers & Beyond: A Day for Health & Wellness

B_b_logo_bw WPBT/Channel 2 is sponsoring Boomers & Beyond: A Day for Health & Wellness  to be held Sunday, March 30, 2008, 12 noon – 4 pm on the main campus at NOVA Southeastern University in Davie.

Many screenings will take place including balance, BMI, bone density, peripheral arterial disease and aortic aneurysm, mental health screening, vision, & stroke prevention. Lots of important health information will be provided.

An “Ask the Expert” Q & A sessions will be available all day long . Raffles, prizes and snacks will be given out as well.
